Kumb / Pushkaram - Festival of Guru (Jupiter)

Brihaspathi (Jupiter) underwent a severe penance. Pleased with him, Lord Brahma said that he would grant him a boon. Jupiter requested the Lord to give away the Pushkara to him, a wish granted. But Pushkara refused to go with Jupiter, leaving Brahma. On a compromise it was decided that Pushkara should remain with Jupiter for 12 days in a year, commencing from the date of Jupiter's entry into each Rasi. Thus, Pushkara in the 12 rivers occurs, corresponding to the 12 Rasis, occupied by Jupiter. The 12 Rasis occupied by Jupiter and the corresponding rivers on whose banks the Pushkaram festival takes place are: Mesha (Ganges), Vrishaba (Narmada), Mithuna (Saraswathi), Kataka (Yamuna), Simha (Godavari), Kanya (Krishna), Tula (Cauveri), Vrischika (Tambaraparni), Dhanus (Sindhu), Makara (Tungabadra), Kumba (Brimaradhi) and Mena (Praneeta).
